President Nyusi today laid the foundation stone for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) factory being built on the Afungi peninsula in Palma district, Cabo Delgado province.

The development plan for the Dolphin Tuna field in Area 1 of the Rovuma Basin was approved in 2018, with the final investment decision following on 18 June this year.

The plant will be owned by US oil company Anadarko, which is investing about US$23 billion in the LNG project.

The plant will have the capacity to produce about 12 million tons of natural gas per year. According to the Mozambican government, the project will make available about 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to the domestic market.

The project will undertake gas extraction, liquefaction and commercialisation in the Rovuma Basin, Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique.
